SETU OCEAN Design Project 2025
This image was submitted as part of a SETU Design Year 4 Project supervised by Joy Rooney, Lecturer and Researcher in Design, and in collaboration with Explore Your Shore! at the National Biodiversity Data Centre.
‘My final illustration features the Atlantic Salmon, one of Ireland’s most threatened species. When I began planning this illustration, I initially imagined creating something darker to reflect the serious challenges facing our oceans. However, I ultimately chose to take a more colourful and light-hearted approach. I felt that this shift would not only steer away from a gloomy or overly negative tone but also make the piece more universally appealing. A brighter image invites connection, drawing people in and reminding them of the beauty we’re all striving to protect.
Additionally, I chose to create this as an illustrative piece specifically for use on recycled materials. This decision was intentional: aligning with the brand’s commitment to sustainability while giving it an organic, hand-crafted feel. The illustration style complements this idea, evoking a sense of something crafted with care. It’s a piece that not only celebrates the vibrancy of marine life but also embodies the values of preservation and conscious consumption.
Together, these elements create a work that feels approachable, environmentally conscious, and full of life.‘
