Developing skills and expertise

One of the main goals of the IOLN over the next three years is to enhance capacity and expertise of the IOLN Members through targeted training and skill development initiatives to ensure they have the critical mass, skills and knowledge necessary to achieve strategic goals.

Thanks to funding from Training Links (The Wheel), we are running a series of expert-led seminars and peer-to-peer best practice sessions on campaigns and advocacy, finance and funding, developing practical skills and evaluating and building impact are designed to strengthen and enhance skills in the community and voluntary sector.

Practical Skills for Ocean Literacy, Cork, 23rd September (news write-up)

  • This workshop explored collaborative approaches to marine conservation, featuring a citizen science activity and an inspiring showcase highlighting how a wide range of individual skills can advance ocean literacy.
 
 

Webinar: Financing Ocean Literacy, 30th October 

  •  This training provided a valuable opportunity to hear from an expert panel and learn from others’ experiences in securing funding for ocean literacy initiatives from diverse sources, while exploring strategic approaches and challenges to financing ocean literacy in Ireland.

Webinar: How to plan and manage Campaigns and advocacy for Ocean Literacy, 4th Feb

  • This workshop built capacity among IOLN members to carry out impactful advocacy and campaigns to support their work to achieve the IOLN’s vision of an ocean literate society on the island of Ireland, through offering practical guidance and helpful supporting resources.

 

Evaluating Ocean Literacy’s Impact, Galway, 22 May

  • This workshop will support IOLN members in exploring how the concrete impact of ocean literacy can be evaluated, with a view to ongoing improvement, informing the growth and continuity of projects and supporting future resource mobilisation opportunities.

Educational guides

Based on these workshops, the group is developing a series of educational guides that convert past training content into practical online resources which will be accessible to IOLN members. These guides will reflect Irish case studies, advice centred around Irish organisational structures, cultures of voluntarism, and current issues, strengthening the capacity of the IOLN to achieve its vision of an ocean literate society on the island of Ireland.
