The Irish Ocean Literacy Network (IOLN) is proud to feature in Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade, Volume III, a major new international publication showcasing Ocean Literacy initiatives from around the world. The book series has been Endorsed as an Ocean Decade Activity by UNESCO. We thank the Department of Climate, Energy and Environment for enabling Open Access of Chapter 15.
Chapter 15 tells the story of the IOLN’s evolution from its establishment in 2016 to the thriving national network it is today. What began as an informal network has grown into a vibrant community, bringing together educators, scientists, NGOs, government agencies, businesses, community groups and individuals who share a vision of an Ocean Literate society across the island of Ireland.
The chapter reflects on the power of networking, collaboration and peer support in building a resilient and inclusive community. It explores the Network’s journey through its first decade—from its early development and the challenges it faced, to its renewal through the dedication of its members, strengthened national partnerships, support from the Horizon Europe Prep4Blue project, and its transition to becoming a company limited by guarantee in 2024.
More than a history of the IOLN, the chapter celebrates the people and organisations who have shaped the Network along the way. It demonstrates how a shared passion for the Ocean can connect people across sectors, creating a stronger, more coordinated movement to inspire understanding, stewardship and action. It also highlights the important role that national Ocean Literacy networks play in achieving the ambitions of the UN Ocean Decade.
We are delighted to see the IOLN’s story recognised alongside inspiring case studies from across the globe and hope it will encourage others to build partnerships, share knowledge and work together to create a more Ocean Literate society.
