ICASE 2026 World Conference Comes to Ireland: Spotlight on the Marine Science Education Strand

8th ICASE World Conference on Science and Technology Education

The 8th ICASE World Conference on Science and Technology Education will take place from 22–25 June 2026 at University College Cork (UCC) — bringing a global community of educators, researchers, and policymakers to Ireland.

This prestigious international conference, organised by the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE), will explore key themes in science and technology education, including sustainability, innovation, and global collaboration. Among its many strands, one stands out as particularly significant for Ireland and the IOLN: the Marine Science Education (MSE) Strand.

A Global Platform for Ocean Literacy

The Marine Science Education Strand, co-organised by the IOLN, is a major feature of the conference and has been officially endorsed by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission as an Ocean Decade Activity, aligning with the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

This strand will bring together participants from across the world to explore how we can strengthen Ocean Literacy and deepen public understanding of the ocean’s vital role in our lives. With contributions from over a dozen countries, the programme reflects a truly global effort to advance marine education, from classroom practice to community engagement and citizen science.

Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade, Volume I

A key highlight of the conference will be the launch of the Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade book series, an endorsed Ocean Decade activity that brings together global expertise on advancing society’s relationship with the ocean.

The three-volume, open-access series — featuring contributions from hundreds of authors across dozens of countries — explores the critical role of Ocean Literacy in transforming education, research, community engagement, and policy, while supporting the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

The IOLN is featured in Chapter 15 of Volume III of this series. Open Access for this Chapter was funded by the Government of Ireland through the Department of Climate, Energy and Environment – for which we are very grateful.

Across four days, the Marine Strand will feature:

  • Inspiring keynote presentations from international leaders in Ocean Literacy
  • A diverse programme of talks, lightning presentations, and poster sessions
  • Opportunities to share research, best practice, and innovative approaches to marine education
  • Networking and collaboration across sectors and disciplines

A Strong Role for Ireland and IOLN

As the conference host country, Ireland will play a central role in the Marine Strand — and the Irish Ocean Literacy Network (IOLN) is proud to be at the heart of this contribution.

IOLN members will be actively involved throughout the event, including:

  • Contributing to keynote sessions and discussions
  • Supporting the moderation of strand sessions
  • Showcasing Irish initiatives in marine and ocean literacy education
  • Engaging with an international audience through presentations and networking

We are also excited to host an exhibition stand at the conference, where we will share information about the IOLN and our national network — the work of our Members and showcase our Education Working Group.

Celebrating Ocean Literacy in Ireland – thank you!

This event and the launch of  Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade is a significant milestone and a testament to the dedication and impact of our Members and partners – thank you all!

Looking Ahead

The ICASE 2026 conference represents a unique opportunity to showcase Ireland’s leadership in Ocean Literacy on a global stage. It also offers a valuable platform to strengthen connections, share knowledge, and inspire future collaboration in marine science education.

We look forward to welcoming colleagues from around the world to Cork and to celebrating the collective efforts that are helping to build a more ocean-literate society.
